about

Title borrowed from a translation of Antonio Lobo Antunes' novel, with an allusive assist from the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop

lyrics

same week Lisa tried to quit smoking
her apartment burned down to nothing
she turns to me in the light of the fire, n sings
you and me, we've perfected the art of losing things

Lisa lost everything in the fire,
there goes the studio apartment
everything she's ever owned, ash in the wind
totally spent, falling to her knees
in the snow, snow falling over
Hennepin Avenue

Lisa lost everything in the fire
but it's strange she feels almost a thousand pounds lighter
she's said goodbye to all the things that used to mean
so much to her
she tried to quit smoking,
she smiles slightly
all the stuff that used to mean so much
it's all just really
nothing

goodbye to the books,
goodbye to the bed
goodbye to all the stupid promises
left unsaid

all you can do is smoke
and sing
you and me
we've
perfected the art
of losing things

sometimes it feels like the whole world's against you

nobody's looking out for you
world's a catatonic dream
a marching army made of all lost things
they were people once, like you, like me
slipped into eternal muck
they lost it all in the land of bad fucking luck

we've perfected the art
the art of losing things
